Youth’s Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) has raised significant concerns regarding the state’s failure to hold accountable those responsible for protecting the rights of citizens amidst violence perpetrated by armed groups. Recent violent outbreaks in Litan, Ukhrul district, have displaced thousands of residents and destroyed their homes, prompting YFPHR to criticize the government’s inaction, especially as these incidents occurred in the presence of Central and State Armed Forces. The group highlights this as a blatant violation of human rights and a failure to prevent violence.
YFPHR notes a disturbing pattern of inter-community clashes in the state over the years, with no comprehensive investigations into the state’s inability to safeguard its citizens’ rights. The pattern of recurring violence, evident since the 1990s, raises doubts about whether state mechanisms, including Central and State Armed Forces, are complicit in exacerbating these conflicts, leading to a deterioration of public safety and community coexistence.
The organization calls on the Government of India to cease its militarization of the region and to take immediate steps to protect the citizens of Manipur, emphasizing the need for accountability and a reevaluation of the security strategies employed in areas affected by violence.
