BJP MLA Yumnam Khemchand Singh is poised to be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Manipur today, with the ceremony scheduled for approximately 6 PM at Lok Bhavan. Alongside him, Nemcha Kipgen from the Kuki-Zo community and Losii Dikho from the Naga People’s Front (NPF) are anticipated to take their oaths as Deputy Chief Ministers. Govindas Konthoujam is expected to oversee the Home Department in the new government.

This ceremony, expected to include senior BJP leaders and alliance partners, marks the establishment of a new government in the northeastern state, following a year-long leadership vacuum caused by Biren Singh’s resignation and subsequent President’s rule amid ethnic conflicts. Khemchand’s election as the leader of the BJP legislature party on Tuesday has facilitated the formation of this government.

Supporters celebrated by congratulating his family, bursting firecrackers, and dancing in the streets. In a statement, Khemchand expressed his commitment to promoting empathy, compassion, and harmony among all communities in the state. He also conveyed gratitude to key figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their trust in him.

Khemchand, 62, has a notable political background, having served as the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2022 and holding several key ministerial roles between 2022 and 2025. Additionally, he has contributed to promoting Taekwondo in the region and made history in late 2025 by becoming the first Indian to receive the 5th Dan black belt in traditional Taekwondo from the Global Traditional Taekwondo Federation in Seoul.
