In a race against time, a joint survey conducted by Ukhrul-based journalists and concerned department officials has revealed alarming threats to the endangered Shirui Lily in Shirui Kashong. The survey, spearheaded by the Ukhrul District Information Office (DIO) and the Ukhrul District Working Journalists’ Association (UDWJA), aimed to assess the current state of the fragile flower’s habitat and raise awareness about the urgent need for conservation efforts.Wungkhan Shimray, Ukhrul DIO, lauded the proactive role of local journalists in organizing the survey and emphasized the critical importance of preserving the region’s natural heritage. Shimray stressed the media’s pivotal role in driving awareness and conservation initiatives.

Addie Chiphang, President of UDWJA, expressed gratitude for the support provided by DIO Wungkhan Shimray in facilitating the survey. Chiphang underscored the mission to spotlight the plight of the Shirui Lily and mobilize concerted action for its protection.Upon reaching the peak, the survey team encountered a breathtaking yet concerning sight: a scattered array of blooming Shirui lilies, many already wilting. Discussions with local villagers revealed challenges posed by the Maram plant, which threatens the lily’s habitat by inhibiting bulb sprouting due to its extensive root system. An elder from the village lamented the suspension of annual controlled burning, a traditional practice essential for managing Maram spread and maintaining a balanced ecosystem conducive to Shirui Lily growth.

As the team navigated varying microclimates, they underscored the need for a multifaceted conservation approach, integrating traditional wisdom with modern scientific practices. Involving local communities and fostering collaboration between stakeholders, environmental experts, and government officials is deemed essential for devising sustainable conservation strategies. Raising public awareness about the significance of the Shirui Lily and the imminent threats it faces is paramount. Media initiatives such as educational campaigns, documentaries, and interactive sessions with local communities can play a pivotal role in mobilizing public support for conservation efforts.
