In an effort to unravel the intricate relationship between microplastics and climate change, a dynamic one-day interactive session titled “Understanding the Nexus of Microplastics and Climate Change: Implications and Solutions” convened at the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change in Imphal East today. Dr. T Brajakumar, the director of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, addressed the attendees, emphasizing the pressing nature of microplastic pollution as a significant contemporary environmental concern. He underscored the necessity of raising awareness regarding microplastics and the associated health risks stemming from exposure.

Dr. Brajakumar highlighted the inevitability of facing the global consequences of climate change and stressed the importance of exploring the intricate relationship between microplastic pollution and climate change. Defined as plastic particles smaller than 5 millimeters, microplastics have pervaded various ecosystems, posing a substantial environmental threat. The session aimed to delve into the interconnected impacts of microplastics pollution and climate change. The session’s agenda included an assessment of the ecological and societal implications of microplastics contamination, with a focus on the health risks posed to human populations. Moreover, it aimed to identify innovative strategies and policies to mitigate microplastics pollution and its contribution to climate change.

Participants explored advancements in detection and remediation technologies while discussing the promotion of policy interventions, regulatory frameworks, public awareness, and community engagement initiatives. The overarching goal of the program was to catalyze collective action towards addressing this urgent environmental challenge and fostering a more sustainable future for the planet.

Resource persons, including Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Director and Professor of NUCSER NITTE, Mangalore, and Dr. Gunimala Chakraborty, Associate Professor at nitte namaste centre, Mangaluru, enriched the session with their expertise.
