On February 7, 2026, the United Naga Council (UNC) voiced serious concerns regarding violence against Starling Shimray in Shakarphung by Kuki youths, which escalated unrest in Litan, Ukhrul, leading to destruction of properties from both Naga and Kuki communities. The UNC reiterated its stance of “neutrality” regarding the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, which has persisted since May 3, 2023, emphasizing peace and normalcy without bias towards any group.
The UNC condemned further violent incidents, notably the torching of a house in K. Lungwiram village on February 9. It highlighted the alarming presence of Kuki militants, armed and organized, instilling fear among local residents, and accused Indian security forces of complicity in the attacks on Naga properties.
The root issues relate to land ownership, and the UNC remains committed to seeking long-term peace and justice, asserting that they will not compromise on their rights and cultural identity in the face of aggression. It has called for mutual respect and peaceful cohabitation among all communities.
As the Lui-Ngai-Ni Seed Sowing festival approaches on February 15, the UNC emphasized that this event symbolizes fraternity, love, and renewal within the Naga community and urges concerted efforts towards harmony and goodwill among all local factions. They seek collective understanding and participation to ensure a restorative festival atmosphere amidst the current tensions.
