Tensions in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district increased after a Meitei cyclist allegedly tried to travel through the Kuki-Zo-dominated area as part of a self-declared Delhi-Imphal “Manipur Peace Route” mission, sparking fierce opposition from locals. There were instant demonstrations along National Highway-2 near Brigadier M. Thomas Ground after it was reported that the biker, named as Malem Thongam, intended to travel through the district. The protest was spearheaded by local women who vowed to stop the bike from entering the region and blocked the highway. Men from surrounding communities quickly joined the protest, transforming the major highway section into a place of ongoing public vigil.
Protesters claimed that the bike would not be permitted to travel through Kangpokpi, calling the route and timing offensive, particularly during the Christmas season. In an already delicate and precarious situation, they claimed that their actions were preventive in nature and intended to stop any future escalation of community tension. We are folks who value peace. We don’t want any tense activities throughout the holiday season. During the rally, a demonstrator declared, “We are here to protect peace in Kangpokpi.”
The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) had already warned the authorities to immediately halt the planned cycling route through Kangpokpi. The committee warned that if the event was permitted to go ahead in spite of considerable opposition from locals, the Kuki-Zo community would not be held accountable for any unfavourable events.
The situation at Brigadier M. Thomas Ground was still tight but under control as of the time this report was filed. Protesters would keep up their vigil and hold their position until the police interfered to prevent the biker from entering the district. The administration has not yet released an official statement. To keep law and order from deteriorating, security agents are keeping a close eye on the situation and staying vigilant.
