Angered by the involvement of BJP MLA LM Khaute in the recent Manipur government formation, women protesters attempted to storm his residence in Churachandpur district. Security forces, including the Assam Rifles, Manipur Police, and Rapid Action Force, used tear gas to disperse the crowd, which engaged in stone-pelting and clashes. The protesters, organized by the Vaiphei Women’s Association, displayed banners stating “LM Khaute sold out” and demanded his resignation while calling for a Separate Administration. Their frustration heightened after Kuki-Zo MLAs attended a legislative session remotely from New Delhi, particularly with Nemcha Kipgen being appointed Deputy Chief Minister in the Yumnam Khemchand-led government sworn in on February 4, 2026. The Kuki-Zo community seeks a separate Union Territory (UT) due to ongoing ethnic tensions and demands for political autonomy and security following violence starting in May 2023. They argue for a distinct administrative structure for hill districts to better address security, land rights, and rehabilitation needs. However, the Central government has opposed this demand, emphasizing its commitment to preserving the territorial integrity of Manipur.
