The Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) has intensified its protest, advocating for the translation of school and college textbooks into the Manipuri language, following the government’s allocation of Rs 18 crore aimed at preserving and promoting this vernacular language. The protest involved forming human chains in Imphal East district, with participants holding placards that proclaimed slogans like “Respect Manipuri Language, Respect Manipur” and “Education in Mother Tongue is Our Right.” MSF general secretary Sundar Khuman emphasized the challenges faced by students who depend on textbooks written in other languages, which disconnects them from their cultural roots and hampers effective learning. The MSF previously submitted a memorandum to the Governor on May 12, 2025, urging a review of educational materials to enhance the promotion of the Manipuri language, recognized in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Protesters are demanding swift action from government authorities to publish and distribute textbooks and reference materials in Manipuri.
