Social activist Malem Thongam has issued a letter to Chief Minister Y Khemchand, urging action to ensure the free and safe movement of the Meitei community across all districts in Manipur within 15 days. Thongam highlighted the lasting crisis between communities, which has persisted for nearly three years, despite his advocacy and democratic agitations to restore peace and normalcy. He expressed concern over ongoing violence and unrest, pointing out that even after the imposition of President’s Rule and a new government, community divisions remain strong.

To promote peace, Thongam initiated a 35-day Peace Awareness Cycling Expedition, starting on March 12 and aimed at raising awareness for harmony across 16 districts. However, he faced restrictions and was prevented from advancing beyond Chandel district. Thongam is requesting clarification from the state government regarding these restrictions and the measures being taken to promote unity.

He has demanded that the government disclose within 15 days the steps being implemented to ensure the Meiteis’ unobstructed movement throughout the state. Additionally, he called for urgent actions to facilitate the surrender of sophisticated weapons held by various groups to enhance public safety. Thongam remains hopeful that the government will prioritize this issue and take the necessary actions to foster peace and normalcy among all communities in Manipur.
