At least six people were reportedly injured during a protest demanding the implementation of the NRC before the Census process in Manipur. The prorest demonstration organised by the Just & Fair Delimitation (JFD) along with several Ima Lup groups was staged at Ima Keithel.
Protesters gathered with placards reading “No NRC, No Census,” “No Free Movement, No Census,” and “Resolve Present Crisis First, Census After,” highlighting concerns over the presence of illegal immigrants and the ongoing crisis in the state.
The protest coincided with the opening of the 7th Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly. Security forces fired tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse the crowd after tensions escalated.
Bishnupur Apunba Ima Lup President Lourembam Pramo stated that until illegal immigrants are properly identified through the NRC or a similar mechanism, conducting the Census would be inappropriate. She also criticized certain policies of the Government of India, saying they do not reflect the concerns of the people.
