The Research Ethics Board, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal organised an Orientation and Sensitization Programme on Ethical Research Practices today at the Sushruta Hall, RIMS, Imphal.
The programme was graced by Prof. S. Jibonkumar Singh, Dean, School of Human & Environmental Sciences, Manipur University, as the Chief Guest, while Prof. N. Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent of RIMS Hospital, presided over the function. Prof. A.K. Joy Singh, Dean, School of Medical Sciences, Manipur University; Dr. Shantibala Konjengbam, Professor & Head, Department of Community Medicine, RIMS; and Prof. L. Rajesh Singh, Dean (Academics), attended the programme as Guests of Honour
Addressing the gathering, Prof. S. Jibonkumar Singh stated that ethical clearance is mandatory for research involving human subjects across disciplines. He noted that while some studies may be exempt, research with ethical concerns requires approval. He emphasized that journals require clearance for publication and informed that the university has an Institutional Human Ethics Committee.
During the programme, the resource persons delivered insightful lectures on “Checklist for Ethical Review of Research Involving Human Participation,” emphasizing participant safety, scientific validity and regulatory compliance; “Bio-Cultural Competence and Ethical Conduct,” highlighting respect for socio-cultural contexts in research and healthcare; and “Foundational Ethical Frameworks: Cardinal Principles,” underscoring autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice as the cornerstones of ethical research practice.
A key highlight of the programme was the conduct of mock ethical review sessions, offering practical exposure to the review process and documentation requirements. The initiative reaffirmed RIMS, Imphal’s commitment to ethical integrity and academic excellence, with participants expressing confidence in strengthening research practices within the institution.
