Rebel groups in Manipur have criticized individuals and organizations involved in the recently held Sangai Festival, describing the event as a “betrayal” to the internally displaced persons (IDPs) still languishing in relief camps. This coalition includes five underground insurgent groups: Kangleipak Communist Party, Kanglei Yawol Kanba Lup, People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, PREPAK (Progressive), and the United National Liberation Front. They are demanding a public apology by December 10, 2025, from all participants of the festival, which took place from November 21 to 30 amid protests from IDPs seeking safe return to their homes. Since ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities began in May 2023, over 260 people have died and thousands remain displaced.

The rebel groups’ joint statement contends that while these families suffer, the state administration, currently under President’s Rule, has not adequately addressed the conflict or initiated rehabilitation efforts. Additionally, they have imposed a one-year ban on four major drama troupes that participated in the festival, claiming they acted against the “wishes of the people.” The militant groups’ ultimatum has intensified tensions in a region grappling with an ongoing crisis and the unresolved issues facing displaced individuals.
