The Department of Transfusion Medicine at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal, in partnership with the State Blood Transfusion Council of Manipur, hosted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme titled “Rational Use of Blood and Patient Blood Management” on a Tuesday at Banting Hall, RIMS. The event was inaugurated by Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, the Director of RIMS, who served as the Chief Guest. He was joined by Prof. N. Sanjib Singh, the Medical Superintendent of RIMS Hospital, in the role of President, and Prof. L. Rajesh Singh, the Dean (Academics) of RIMS, as the Guest of Honour.
The focus of the CME was to enhance the knowledge of healthcare professionals regarding evidence-based transfusion practices and patient-centered blood management. In his opening address, Prof. Sharma underscored the critical need for rational blood utilization, adherence to ethical transfusion practices, and the importance of maintaining public support for voluntary blood donation. He also reiterated RIMS’ dedication to quality healthcare, noting the acquisition of a plasma apheresis machine as part of this commitment.
The programme featured expert lectures from both local and non-local resource persons covering various topics including patient blood management, the rational use of blood components, bedside transfusion practices, dengue-related platelet transfusion, and pertinent legal regulations regarding transfusion. The CME encouraged the engagement of faculty members, residents, medical officers, and other healthcare professionals, fostering a culture of safe and effective transfusion practices among participants.
