Tensions flared within the Cheirap Court Complex in Manipur as angry protestors demanded the unconditional release of six individuals arrested under disputed circumstances. The situation turned volatile, leading to the Rapid Action Force (RAF) firing tear gas shells inside the complex to disperse the agitated crowd, resulting in injuries, including a video journalist.
The deployment of tear gas drew condemnation from court officials and advocates, questioning the legality and authorization of such actions within the court premises. Despite widespread calls for the unconditional release of the arrested individuals, they have been remanded in judicial custody until March 5, 2024, following their arrest in connection with the alleged looting of arms and ammunition from the 5th IRB in Chingarel Tejpur on February 13.
Protestors, including women vendors, have vowed to escalate their opposition, announcing a cease-work strike until the arrested persons are freed. The protestors argue that the detained individuals are civilians and should not be subject to judicial custody.
Addressing the media, Brahmacharimayum Supriya, Vice President of All Manipur Bar Association, strongly criticized the deployment of tear gas within the court premises, labeling it as illegal and demanding accountability for those responsible.
Meanwhile, Laisharm Mema, convenor of the Joint Coordinating Committee of Khwairamband Ima Market, lambasted the state government for the arrests, describing them as unjustifiable. Mema urged political leaders to act decisively to address the ongoing crisis in Manipur, emphasizing the need for effective governance to safeguard the state’s interests.
