OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed AI firm, is reportedly exploring partnerships in India to establish a data center with a capacity of at least 1 gigawatt, according to Bloomberg News. The report, which cites unnamed sources, suggests that this move could significantly boost OpenAI’s infrastructure presence in Asia under its Stargate initiative.
OpenAI has already registered as a legal entity in India and begun assembling a local team. The company announced in August that it plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year, marking a key expansion in its second-largest user market.
While the exact location and timeline for the proposed data center remain unclear, Bloomberg reports that CEO Sam Altman might unveil the project during his scheduled visit to India in September.
Stargate, a major AI infrastructure initiative announced by former U.S. President Donald Trump in January, involves private investments of up to $500 billion from companies including SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle. OpenAI did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment outside regular business hours.
