A training program focused on “Mushroom Cultivation and Beekeeping (Apiculture)” was conducted at the Community Hall, Serou Mayai Leikai, aimed at restoring livelihoods for rehabilitated Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). This initiative was organized by the District Officer for Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Thoubal, in partnership with the Sub-Divisional Officer of Waikhong, in Kakching District. Key figures attending the program included Arvind Hanglem, IAS, SDO Waikhong (chief guest), Supreme Thongam from the DC Office Kakching (guest of honor), and Kh. Malemnganba Meitei, the district officer for horticulture and soil conservation (president).
The training sessions featured Akoijam Ratankumar Singh, a Senior Scientist at ICAR, leading discussions on mushroom cultivation, while P. Bhumika, an Assistant Professor at Central Agricultural University, addressed beekeeping. Arvind Hanglem emphasized the critical role of training and skill development in fostering sustainable livelihoods, specifically using the example of an IDP. He also underscored the necessity for collaboration amongst various governmental departments to ensure the effective execution of government schemes and the distribution of benefits to the populace.
Supreme Thongam highlighted the proactive stance of the District Administration Kakching to ensure outreach of departmental schemes to every area of the district, particularly focusing on enhancing the living conditions of IDPs. He mentioned that logistical support would be provided for the procurement of mushroom spawn and that additional assistance would be extended to those interested in pursuing mushroom cultivation as a continuation of the training.
Kh. Malemnganba Meitei, as the program’s president, provided comprehensive information on the array of government schemes designed to assist individuals in mushroom cultivation and beekeeping. He reaffirmed that logistical support would be available for purchasing mushroom spawn and emphasized the commitment to aid participants wishing to delve into mushroom cultivation following the training session.
