A major disaster was narrowly avoided in Assam’s Tamulpur district when villagers found an unexploded 81 mm mortar shell in the Khandajan River near Bimalanagar, close to an old firing range under Nagrijuli Police Outpost. The mortar became visible due to soil erosion and was discovered on Sunday by locals, who promptly informed the authorities. Assam Police and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) quickly cordoned off the area and maintained a vigilant watch. On Monday, a bomb disposal squad recovered the mortar shell, as confirmed by SSP Diganta Kumar Choudhury. The operation was carried out carefully in the presence of police, SSB, and the village headman, ensuring no casualties or damage. Locals praised the prompt and coordinated response by security forces. Officials urged residents nearby to stay alert and report any suspicious items, especially in former military zones.
