Tensions escalate in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district following an early morning IED explosion that partially damaged a bridge on National Highway 2, disrupting traffic on April 23rd. Expressing grave concern over the surge in violence, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident. The Meetei body has urged the state government to hand over the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) without delay to ensure justice for the affected 3.5 million residents of the state. The vital artery, connecting India and Myanmar, serves as a lifeline for the local populace and facilitates trade and connectivity throughout Southeast Asia.

COCOMI’s statement highlights the recurring nature of such attacks, citing a similar incident in the Kwakta areas of CCpur district border on June 21, 2023, which was previously investigated by the NIA, resulting in the apprehension of individuals linked to the Kuki community. Describing the bombing as a blatant war crime, COCOMI condemns the attackers’ disregard for human life and humanitarian principles. The involvement of all concerned parties, including the KSO executive, must be thoroughly investigated to shed light on the incident.

The region’s complex dynamics, marked by opium cultivation, illegal village expansions, and an influx of undocumented immigrants from Myanmar, further complicate the situation. Additionally, the area serves as a base for Chin-Kuki narco-terrorist groups, operating under a suspension of operation agreement with the Government of India. Amidst condemnation from various quarters, COCOMI reiterates its demand for an immediate and comprehensive investigation, urging swift action from authorities to ensure justice prevails.

In response, the Kuki Student body has issued a press release condemning the incident, while tribal bodies have convened an emergency meeting to address the aftermath of the explosion, calling for unity among stakeholders, village elders, and civil organizations.
