A new chapter in healthcare is unfolding in the Northeast as Medanta has begun construction of its 400+ bed super-speciality hospital in Guwahati. The Bhoomi Poojan ceremony on October 31 was attended by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Medanta Chairman & MD Dr. Naresh Trehan and Group CEO Pankaj Sahni, marking a moment many families in the region have long waited for — access to world-class treatment closer to home.

The ₹500-crore facility at Sarusajai Industrial Estate along NH-27 will provide advanced transplants, robotic surgeries, cardiac and neuro sciences, oncology, trauma care and full diagnostic services. Beyond modern care, the project is expected to create 5,000–7,000 jobs, offering new opportunities for youth and healthcare professionals across the Northeast.

Dr. Trehan said quality healthcare should not depend on geography, calling the project a major step in bridging long-standing gaps. Sahni highlighted Guwahati’s role as the region’s healthcare gateway, serving over 50 million people. With Medanta’s entry into Guwahati, residents and analysts expect easier access to advanced procedures, shorter travel for critical cases and new hope for patients battling chronic and life-threatening illnesses. Healthcare observers say the move could also encourage more super-speciality investments in Shillong, strengthening the broader Northeast medical landscape.
