The Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) has mandated that all vehicles operating in Manipur must display their registration numbers in the Meetei Mayek script by March, warning of potential repercussions for non-compliance. This initiative is part of MEELAL’s ongoing efforts to promote and normalize the use of the indigenous Meetei Mayek script within public domains across the state. In an effort to raise awareness, MEELAL volunteers have started visiting passenger transport parking hubs and engaging with various transport associations to educate vehicle owners about the new requirement and ensure compliance within the deadline.

MEELAL spokesperson Sadokpam Tomba Mangang indicated that numerous transport associations have expressed their willingness to implement the new Meetei Mayek number plates. He urged vehicle owners to adopt the Meetei Mayek script not only on registration plates but also in route signage and other vehicle markings. Additionally, a review meeting has been scheduled for March 14 to evaluate compliance levels. Vehicles failing to display the Meetei Mayek registration numbers post-deadline may be subjected to actions by the organization, as warned by the spokesperson.
