Over 270 runners from across India gathered in Ukhrul district, Manipur, to take part in the “Run for Nongin” marathon on Sunday. The event aimed to raise awareness about the endangered state bird, the Nongin (Mrs Hume’s Pheasant), and promote environmental responsibility ahead of the upcoming 5th Shirui Lily Festival. The 11-kilometre race began from Phungreitang and ended at Shirui Village. Wede Tmero from Nagaland’s Phek district clinched first place, while Ukhrul locals Thotngacheirin Hunphun Luiyi and Ringhorsem Muinao secured second and third positions respectively.
A parallel “Trash Race” with 116 participants highlighted the importance of cleanliness and sustainable practices. Competitors collected litter along a 1.3-kilometre route, with Grace A Shatsang winning by collecting over 11 kilograms of waste. District Forest Officer Gitla Laishram, who flagged off both races, stressed the need for community involvement in preserving the Nongin and reducing plastic use. “Protecting our state bird and the Shirui Lily, our state flower, requires a collective effort,” she said.
Organised in partnership with the 7 Sisters Foundation, Manipur Forest Department, and Manipur Olympic Association, the event also saw participation from Ukhrul Deputy Commissioner Asish Das and other district officials. A cleanliness drive at the Mini Secretariat in Hamleikhong was held as part of the pre-festival activities.
