In a significant development, the Manipur Legislative Assembly concluded its proceedings today during the ongoing 5th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly by passing six crucial bills.
The bills passed include: “The Manipur Names of Places Bill, 2024”; “The Manipur Goods and Services Tax (sixth amendment) bill, 2023”; “The Manipur Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (fifth amendment) Bill, 2024”; “The Manipur Municipalities (11th amendment) Bill, 2024”; “The Manipur Labour Laws (Exemption from Renewal of Registration and Licence by Establishments) Bill, 2023”; and “The Manipur Prevention of Malpractices in High School Leaving Certificate and Higher Secondary Examinations Bill, 2024”.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh emphasized the significance of the government’s approach towards the renaming of places in Manipur, citing potential confusion arising from such changes. Reflecting on past attempts to rename places like Churachandpur to Lamka and Thangjing Reserve Forest to Haokip Reserve Forest, he deemed it unfortunate that certain individuals sought to alter names bestowed by the state’s forefathers. In response, the Manipur Names of Places Bill, 2024 has been enacted to prevent arbitrary name changes for places, rivers, lakes, educational institutions, roads, and more.
