The 1st Manipur Digital Media Conclave 2026, organized by Manipur Update at Sangai Hall, Hotel Imphal, included the presentation of the Digital Journalism Awards 2026. Chief Guest A. Subash Singh, Director of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), highlighted the evolving landscape of journalism, emphasizing the shift from traditional forms to digital platforms which facilitate global news dissemination. He raised concerns about some individuals identifying as digital journalists primarily for monetary gains, urging them to prioritize genuine reporting over seeking social media validation. He stressed the importance of independent journalism, especially in countering the rise of paid news and protecting news credibility, while also addressing the dangers of unverified information that can harm individuals’ reputations and mental health.

Sobhapati Samom, Senior Journalist and Founding Editor of Manipur Update, recounted the publication’s history and discussed the concerns of media obsolescence with the rise of digital platforms. He aligned his comments with DIPR’s Tableau theme of “Digital Responsibility for Social Stability and Harmony,” underlining the need for responsible digital media use. Ngangom Uttam Singh, Joint Secretary of Tribal Affairs & Hills, warned about the extensive reliance on social media for information, acknowledging the potential harm from irresponsible reporting and the severe consequences of misinformation.

Irengbam Arun, Senior Editor and Jury Member, noted the high quality of entries for the Digital Journalism Awards, optimistic about the future of digital journalism with appropriate mentorship. The conclave hosted technical sessions on significant topics, including the transition from traditional to new media and the role of digital media in conflict resolution and peacebuilding. The highlight of the awards was the designation of Vangamla Salle as the Digital Journalist of the Year.
