Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh launched the Manipur Heli Service Portal during the Grand Finale of National Road Safety Month Observation, 2026, held at the City Convention Centre, Imphal. This initiative aims to improve connectivity and accessibility. In his address, the Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to repairing neglected roads to enhance safety and reduce accidents. During the event, he also flagged off two interceptor vehicles from the Transport Department, designed to enhance road safety by detecting traffic violations in real-time using advanced technology, including high-definition cameras and breath analyzers, thereby automating fine issuance for improved compliance and responsible driving in Manipur.
Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh highlighted the urgent need for a joint effort between the government and the public to combat the high annual death toll of approximately 1.8 lakh road accidents in India, urging strict adherence to traffic rules to minimize casualties. Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh stressed the importance of raising awareness about traffic regulations, while Chief Secretary Dr. Puneet Kumar Goel identified four key stakeholders: the Public Works Department, Transport Department, Traffic authorities, and the public, necessary for preventing road accidents. Additional Chief Secretary Anurag Bajpai noted that Manipur’s road accident fatality rate is nearly three times the national average, citing issues like overloading, drunk driving, and disregard for safety measures.
As part of the program, a short film showcasing awareness drives and citizen participation in traffic safety was screened. The Chief Minister presented Certificates of Commendation to two Assistant Sub Inspectors for their significant contributions in generating e-challan revenue. Awards were also given to winners of a marathon and painting competition focused on promoting traffic laws, with a 10K run organized under the theme “Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha” reinforcing the message that road safety saves lives.
