Five major civil society organizations in Manipur—AMAWOVA, AMUCO, COHR, MSF, and Poirei Leimarol Apunba Manipur—will jointly observe International Human Rights Day on December 10, 2025, with events organized at various locations across the state. AMUCO president Sanjoy Sorokhaibam emphasized the persistent human rights issues in Manipur despite constitutional protections and international norms. Citing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the Indian Constitution’s Fundamental Rights, Sorokhaibam expressed concern that numerous rights are being violated, particularly due to the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) of 1958. He highlighted the ongoing conflict since May 3, 2023, which has led to over 60,000 displaced individuals, around 250 fatalities, and 35 missing persons. Displaced families face significant hardships, including unsafe travel, disrupted livelihoods, and a lack of access to welfare programs. Despite over 60,000 central paramilitary personnel in deployment, normalcy has not yet returned. Sorokhaibam referenced this year’s global theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” and India’s theme, “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials,” indicating a pressing need for rights protection and dignity restoration amid the crisis. He criticized the inadequate daily compensation of Rs. 84 for internally displaced persons and the inaccessibility of farmlands due to buffer zones, further harming the local economy. Sorokhaibam called for political intervention, the repeal of AFSPA, and sustainable peace strategies, encouraging the people of Manipur to defend their fundamental rights. The observance events will take place at 10:00 AM on December 10 at various sites, including THAU Ground in Thangmeiband, Menjor Unity Park in Khangabok, Universal Academy in Sekmaijin Khunnou, Ningthoukhong Bazar, and Jiribam District Headquarters.
