The Kakching district police picked up one IRB person on Monday for investigation in connection with Ch. Malemnganba’s death case.
The arrested IRB personnel was identified as Salam Oken Meitei, 39, son of Salam Thabal Meitei. He is from the same locality with the deceased Malemnganba. He is currently attached to the Kakching district police commando from the 7th IRB and is posted in Serou.
He has been taken into 10 days of police custody remand by Kakching Police for investigation after being presented before the duty magistrate in Kakching.
Meanwhile, upon hearing that Salam Oken was apprehended, the family of the deceased Malemnganba and the angry residents of the locality went to Oken’s house this morning and tried to set fire to the belongings inside the house. However, the situation was brought under control on time by a large number of teams from Kakching District Police and the Commando Kakching Unit as they rushed to the spot on time.
It may be recalled here that Chingakham Malemnganba, 51, a resident of Tejpur Awang Leikai, Kakching district, was shot dead by unidentified persons at Keirak Muslim Makha Leikai, under Kakching Police Station of Kakching District, at around 6:30 pm on March 13.
A Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the killing of Chingakham Malemnganba Meitei was formed. The committee has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as an inhuman and barbaric act committed against an innocent citizen.
Under the aegis of the JAC, a sit-in protest was organized at Tejpur Primary School in Kakching/Keirak, demanding that authorities conduct a thorough, impartial, and time-bound investigation into the killing and identify all those involved by March 16.
The JAC had made it clear that neither the family members nor the committee would claim the body of the deceased until the culprits were identified and arrested. It also warned that democratic forms of agitation would be launched if justice were delayed.
