Indian travellers, from backpackers to Bon-Vivants, are reshaping domestic tourism and playing a crucial role in international travel, making every corner of the globe accessible. Taking insights from travel searches by its100M+annual active users, MakeMyTrip has put together some of the top behaviours of Indian travellers it the first edition of its India Travel Trends Report. Insights include where, when and how India travels, top trends from millions of journeys – both from a national and a region-wiseperspective.
The report highlights a 25% increase in the number of people taking more than three trips per year in 2023 compared to 2019. Additionally, searches for destinations with or around religious spots in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities have grown by 97% in the last two years. In 2023, Indian travelers’ searches for Ayodhya, Ujjain, and Badrinath increased by 585%, 359%, and 343% compared to 2022. Weekend getaways, such as Jim Corbett, Ooty, and Munnar, saw a 131% increase. Dubai, Bangkok, and Singapore were the most searched long-haul destinations, while London, Toronto, and New York were the most searched short-haul destinations.
Emerging international destinations like Hong Kong, Almaty, Paro, Baku, Da Nang, and Tbilisi also experienced significant growth.
