In response to recent incidents of violence in Chingarel Tejpur and Churachandpur, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has announced the initiation of magisterial inquiries. Addressing the media at his secretariat, Singh condemned the loss of lives during the arm-snatching attempt at Manipur Police Training College, Pangei, and the unrest in Churachandpur, labeling the events as unfortunate. Singh highlighted immediate actions taken following the arm looting incident, with seven police personnel suspended due to suspicions surrounding the incident. Similarly, one police constable was suspended in Churachandpur after alleged involvement with militants. However, Singh emphasized that suspensions could be appealed or revoked through higher authorities.
The Chief Minister expressed dismay at the subsequent violence, which resulted in casualties and property damage. He announced magisterial inquiries into both incidents and hinted at potential legal action against individuals inciting violence through social media platforms. While not directly naming individuals, Singh referred to a tweet posted on the day of the Churachandpur incident, suggesting a possible connection between the tweet and the subsequent arson. FIRs have been lodged against those responsible for such provocations.
Responding to allegations made by the ITLF against Churachandpur district officials, Singh affirmed the government’s support for the officials and condemned threats against them. He also raised concerns about the potential targeting of government documents and reiterated the state’s readiness to protect them. The Chief Minister addressed suspicions regarding the recent unrest, hinting at possible motives to destroy documents related to the identification of illegal immigrants. Despite challenges, Singh reassured the public of the government’s preparedness to uphold law and order in the state.
