Amid ongoing protests in the Kuki-Zo areas regarding the involvement of MLAs from the community in forming the popular government, Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh urged all parties to maintain peace and avoid violence. This call followed a cabinet meeting aimed at addressing the unrest in the northeastern state, particularly in the Kuki-majority Churachandpur district, where two tribal organizations declared a “total shutdown.” Protests in the region included rallies against the participation of three Kuki-Zo-Hmar MLAs, who protesters claim have betrayed their community after Kuki MLA Nemcha Kipgen joined the BJP-led government as deputy chief minister. Clashes erupted Thursday evening between security forces and demonstrators in Churachandpur. Khemchand reassured the public through social media that a review meeting had taken place to assess and respond to the situation. He emphasized compassion as a guiding principle and encouraged compliance with constitutional and legal standards. Additionally, agitators burned effigies of Kipgen and fellow MGMLA legislators LM Khaute and N Sanate, leading to further protests in Kangpokpi and Tengnoupal districts. Khemchand concluded by urging that no community should lose hope for a better life.
