In a firm effort to reclaim public spaces, the Jiribam district administration launched an eviction drive on Wednesday to remove unauthorised structures along key roads in the town. The operation was supported by the district police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), and the Public Works Department (PWD).

The drive, which covered areas from IB Road to the Jiri Market approach lane, led to the demolition of eight illegal structures, including makeshift shops and sheds encroaching on public land and footpaths. Excavators were used to dismantle these structures, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety. Officials cited the Manipur Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1978, as the legal basis for the operation.

Earlier, the administration had issued public notices and urged residents and shopkeepers to voluntarily remove encroachments. However, with non-compliance persisting, authorities proceeded with the eviction. The operation was overseen by SDO Jiribam, L. Tarajeet Singh (MCS), alongside revenue and PWD officials.

Authorities emphasized that similar actions will continue if illegal occupation of public areas persists. The initiative is part of broader plans to enhance urban infrastructure, ensure public safety, and maintain civic order in Jiribam.
