A group of volunteers from Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) attempted to protest against a proposed census exercise related to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) outside the Manipur Legislative Assembly Complex in Imphal. As they gathered at Thangmeiband, carrying placards and banners, security personnel intervened and blocked their passage, preventing them from approaching the assembly during its seventh sitting. The area was heavily secured to maintain order, and, despite the blockade, the situation remained peaceful with the protesters monitored by security forces. The JFD is advocating for the postponement of the census until illegal immigrants are properly identified, proposing that the year 1951 be used as the cutoff for citizenship determination. They had previously submitted a memorandum to the Union Home Minister on December 15, 2025, pressing for a deferral of the census until the issue of illegal immigration and the state’s ongoing conflict are resolved.
