Along with the rest of the World,the observance of International Mother Language Day was held today at Khorirol Sanglel, Wangjing, Thoubal district.
The programme was jointly organised by Khorirol Sandok-lup, Wangjing; Manipuri Sahitya Parishad; and Ningol Khut Manipur, Wangjing.
The main highlights of the event included discussions on the importance of mother languages, book releasing, recitation of literary poems and short story reading.
The programme witnessed the presence of Kartik Maiba, President of SAYOKA Tentha; Tongbram Babulal, President of Khorirol Sandok-lup, Wangjing; Dr. Yumnam Mahendra Kumar, President of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad; and Khundongbam Gunamani Leima, President of Ningol Khut Manipur, Wangjing, as chief guests and presidium members.
During the technical session focusing on the significance of mother languages, Sengoi Sanasam presented a paper on “The Present Status of Manipuri Language and the Measures for its Development.” Nongthombam Sanjib spoke on “The Challenges Facing the Manipuri Language Today,” while Bhorot Sanasam delivered a talk on “The Role of Language in Strengthening Community Identity.”
The speakers elaborated on their respective topics before the gathering. Earlier, a book titled “Selected Writings on the Manipuri Language”, a collection of essays on Manipuri language written by Tongbram Babulal, Sengoi Sanasam, Nongthombam Sanjib and Bhorot Sanasam was formally released during the function.
Speaking at the occasion, Laishram Shyamo, Secretary of Khorirol Sandok-lup, Wangjing, stated that every nation in the world deeply cherishes its mother tongue. However, with the rapid pace of modernisation, many indigenous languages and dialects are facing the threat of extinction. He noted that under the initiative of the United Nations and UNESCO, International Mother Language Day is observed across the globe to promote and preserve linguistic diversity.
The programme concluded with poetry recitations and short story reading presented by various participants, making the observance more vibrant and meaningful.
A large number of language lovers and cultural enthusiasts attended the event, expressing their commitment to preserving and promoting the mother tongue.
