The Indigenous People’s Forum Manipur (IPFM) has called on Manipur Governor A K Bhalla to clarify the status of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement with armed Kuki militant groups, alleging involvement of some groups in poppy cultivation in the state’s hills. During a press conference at the Manipur Press Club, IPFM Chief Advisor Ashang Kasar emphasized that the SoO pact, intended to foster peace, has instead led to terror and environmental degradation, as militants clear forest land for poppy plantation, adversely impacting indigenous communities’ livelihoods.

Kasar noted that the SoO agreement is set to expire in February 2025 and raised concerns over the public’s ignorance regarding the current status and operations of SoO camps. He urged for transparency on the matter, highlighting its significance to public safety and welfare. A memorandum has been submitted to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Governor Bhalla requesting clarification on the situation. Additionally, Kasar warned against the establishment of SoO camps in sensitive areas, insisting that such actions should not be allowed under any circumstances.
