India’s orthopaedic healthcare market is entering a period of rapid expansion, underscored by Medanta Gurugram’s announcement that Dr. Ashok Rajgopal, Group Chairman – Medanta Institute of Musculoskeletal Disorders and Orthopaedics, has completed 40,000 knee replacement surgeries. The achievement reflects both rising demand and Medanta’s growing dominance in high-value orthopaedic care.
Knee osteoarthritis, projected to impact 60 million Indians by 2025, is emerging as a key driver of demand. Annual knee replacement procedures have surged to 2.5 lakh—more than double the number five years ago. Industry projections indicate a steady 11% CAGR for the sector between 2025–2035, fueled by longer life expectancy, sedentary lifestyles, and increasing awareness of advanced surgical options.
Rising household incomes and greater health awareness, however, are increasing demand for local solutions. Market observers believe that as Medanta expands into the Northeast, healthcare ecosystem will become more integrated with advanced surgical networks, reducing patient outflow and strengthening regional healthcare economics. Dr. Rajgopal said that robotic-assisted surgeries and patient-specific approaches are set to shape the sector’s next growth phase.
