The people of Imphal East took to the streets in a massive rally today to protest against the extension of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement between the government of India and Kuki militant groups. Organized jointly by the Village Protection Force, The United Committee of Pukhao and Makeng Dolaithabi Gram Panchayat, and Eramdam Kanba Lup (EKA) Imphal East, the protest rally commenced from Sambei Ground in the Khundfrakpam constituency under Imphal East district.
Initially intended to culminate at Governor’s Bungalow for memorandum submission, the rally faced resistance from Manipur Police personnel at Pangei Bazaar, leading to a brief confrontation. Despite obstacles, protestors attempted to proceed but were halted at the 6th IRB post by an increased presence of Rapid Action Force.
However, a select group managed to deliver their memorandum to the chief minister and governor. Thokchom Sanjoy, President of the United Committee of Pukhao and Makeng Dolaithabi Gram Panchayat, voiced concerns over the impending end of the SoO agreement on February 29. He emphasized the detrimental impact of allowing Kuki militants, operating under SoO, to aid illegal immigrants in destabilizing the state by demanding separate administration. Sanjoy urged both central and state governments to firmly oppose such demands, safeguarding the integrity of the state.
