A memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Kakching by the Joint Non-Government Voluntary Organisation (JNGVO) urges the district administration to take action against illegal sand and stone extraction from the Sengmai River. Signed by JNGVO President Kshetrimayum Chhatradhari and General Secretary Nongmaithem Bheigyachandra, the memorandum highlights that the Sengmai River is crucial for water supply to various areas, including Pallel and Kakching, serving multiple purposes such as irrigation and domestic use. The organisation expresses concern over the reduced water level during the dry season, exacerbated by ongoing extraction activities utilizing heavy machinery like JCBs. The memorandum warns that these practices threaten both water availability and ecological balance, urging the Deputy Commissioner to conduct a thorough inquiry and take legal action to protect public interest and the environment. Additionally, a recent inspection conducted on February 23 revealed multiple extraction sites where such activities were observed, further emphasizing the need for intervention.
