The Central Agricultural University (CAU), as part of the All India Coordinated Research Project on Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (AICRP on PHET), organized a training program focused on fermented soybean (Hawaijar) production in Imphal West district. This initiative primarily targeted internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the Lamboikhongnangkhong relief camp and is part of efforts to enhance livelihood opportunities across Manipur. Dr. Thangjam Anand Singh, a Senior Scientist at CAU Imphal, emphasized that Hawaijar production presents a viable sustainable livelihood option, particularly for women entrepreneurs interested in home-based enterprises. He noted the unique flavor and quality of Hawaijar from Manipur and the increasing demand for it, which could benefit small-scale food processing industries. CAU plans to continue supporting relief camp residents with skill-based training and technical guidance. Dr. Heisnam Nandita Devi, also a Senior Scientist at CAU, discussed the preparation of value-added products, including pickles and other fermented items from Hawaijar, highlighting the need for stringent hygiene and fermentation practices. The training was attended by approximately 50 participants and included a live demonstration by Sanasam Menthoibi Devi, providing hands-on experience in Hawaijar preparation techniques.
