Former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh emphasized on a recent occasion that violence is never an appropriate solution to societal problems, using the tragic assassination of Moirangthem Ibotombi as a stark illustration of the dire repercussions of violent acts. This statement was made during the observance of the 31st death anniversary of Moirangthem Ibotombi Singh at the Moirangthem Ibotombi Memorial Complex in Heirok Part-II, Mayai Leikai. The memorial event, organized by the 31st Moirangthem Ibotombi Memorial Charitable Trust, underscored the ongoing impact of Ibotombi’s life and work.

In his address, Ibobi Singh asserted that violence does not yield positive outcomes for society and reiterated that taking another person’s life contradicts the fundamental nature of humanity. He called for a collective effort to eliminate the prevailing culture of violence, advocating for the citizens of Manipur to unite in their pursuit of peace and harmony. He remarked, “If every individual chooses to live peacefully and resolve conflicts without violence, Manipur can truly become a peaceful state.”

The event was inaugurated by Moirangthem Ongbi Ibemhal, the widow of the late Ibotombi, who was honored through a photo exhibition showcasing his life and contributions to the community. The occasion was centered around the theme ‘Hingsi Amadi Hinghansi’ (Peace and Harmony) and included various activities meant to benefit the community, such as a blood donation camp and a significant pension distribution initiative aimed at senior citizens, widows, and differently-abled persons. Approximately 2,300 individuals received their pensions, complementing the 200 youths who participated in the blood donation camp.

Moirangthem Ibotombi, a well-respected community figure, was murdered in his home on December 7, 1994. The Trust commemorates his legacy annually, seeking to inspire future generations to adhere to his principles of peace and non-violence. The memorial gathering attracted notable attendees, including MLA K. Ranjit (Sugnu AC), MLA Th. Lakeshor (Khundrakpam AC), various Congress leaders, and a significant number of community residents who came together to honor Ibotombi’s enduring influence.
