A one-day awareness programme on Hornbill Conservation was organized by the Tamenglong Forest Division at Khundong Khunkhaiba village in Tamei Range, in collaboration with local authorities including the Khundong Khunkhaiba Village Authority and the Liangmai Naga Council, Western Zone. The event featured notable attendees such as the Chief Guest, Range Forest Officer Khundrakpam Johnson from Tamei Range, Guest of Honour P Mairisibou, Chairman of the Liangmai Naga Council, and President Mathiugomang Thiumai, Vice Chairman of Khundong Khunkhaiba. Approximately 60 participants, including men and women from nearby villages—such as Lenglong, Dikuram, Upper Takou, Lower Takou, Tamei HQ, and Konphung village—joined the programme.
The region is historically significant as a habitat for four species of hornbills: the Great Hornbill, the Oriental Pied Hornbill, the Rufous-necked Hornbill, and the Wreathed Hornbill. To enhance awareness about these Schedule 1 species, as classified under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, pamphlets detailing various hornbill species present in the Tamenglong district were distributed to attendees, thereby promoting ecological education and conservation efforts in the community.
