Imphal: On Tuesday night, an armed criminal broke into the Imphal residence of a senior police officer. The firing caused damage to four parked cars at the house. Around 6:20 p.m., the police said, there was gunfire at the residence of Amit Mayengbam, Additional Superintendent of Police, Imphal West. In reaction to the assailant, the security officers stationed at SP’s house also discharged their weapons.
But the assailant is running away, and it’s unclear why they attacked.
The initial report states that the security personnel are attempting to uphold law and order while the situation in the neighborhood remains tight.
Since May of last year, Manipur has been tense due to violence that broke out during a “Tribal Solidarity March” in the hill regions in opposition to the Meitei community’s request for Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation.
Since then, acts of community violence have claimed the lives of almost 180 people.
