Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh of Manipur has appealed to Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for intervention to protect the Koirengei airfield, a historically significant site from World War II. Singh, who served from 2017 to 2025, mentioned that he has made multiple requests during his tenure to preserve the airfield, highlighting its importance as part of their shared heritage. He expressed his distress over ongoing destruction and construction at the site, which has led to concerns among civilians. Biren emphasized that more than 300 acres of land have already been allocated to the Assam Rifles and over 100 acres to the BSF near the airfield, underscoring the urgency for protective measures to be implemented for the area in the interest of both local residents and the nation.
