For two and a half years, the terms Kuki and Meitei have been synonymous with violence and despair in India. However, on a significant evening in Ahmedabad, they united to celebrate a victory, portraying joy and the essence of unity. India’s Under-17 football team achieved a landmark 2–1 victory over Iran, securing a spot in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup finals in Saudi Arabia. The goals were scored by Dallalmuon Gangte, a Kuki player, and Gunleiba Wangkheirakpam, a Meitei player, exemplifying the shared aspirations of these two communities in Manipur.
The match was played against the backdrop of ongoing unrest in Manipur, where many are still living in relief camps due to past violence. Despite this, social media witnessed a rise in voices transcending the ethnic divide, with one Meitei group stating, “A Kuki and a Meitei scored tonight. If football can unite us, maybe peace can too.” The All India Football Federation (AIFF) squad includes nine players from Manipur, highlighting the rich football heritage of a region often overshadowed by conflict.
In Manipur, the landscapes that were once fraught with fear are slowly reviving, with children playing football despite harsh realities, including over 58,000 individuals still living in makeshift shelters and widespread hardship. The night of the match served as a reminder of the unity that football can bring, offering a momentary escape for many, while underscoring the pressing challenges still faced by the communities. This victory not only marked a sporting achievement but also reignited hope for a peaceful future, reinforcing the notion that, even amid strife, shared dreams can foster togetherness. One India, through the goals of two boys, symbolised a collective aspiration for harmony in a divided landscape.
