The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation has urged Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to adopt a resolution during the forthcoming session on February 6, advocating for the deferment of the census in Manipur. The campaign emphasizes that failing to pass such a resolution may have significant, detrimental long-term implications, particularly for the indigenous population, given current circumstances. This stance was reiterated at a public meeting held in collaboration with the Sandha Leima Women’s Association at the Kokchai Community Hall, where campaign convenor Jeetendra Ningomba highlighted the importance of conducting the census in line with established norms to accurately reflect the population.

Ningomba raised concerns regarding unregulated immigration from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar, which he claims has drastically shifted demographic patterns in various areas. He also mentioned an increase in the number of villages in specific hill districts over the years, noting these trends as a source of serious concern. Furthermore, the campaign contends that without addressing the issues related to illegal immigration—such as updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC)—proceeding with the census would be inappropriate. The campaign referenced instances where census activities have been postponed in other regions due to special circumstances, arguing that Manipur should be granted similar treatment in light of the current challenges it faces.
