The case of assault of two Rongmei women by locals in Manipur’s Bishnupur district was settled amicably after a meeting between Rongmei Naga Council Manipur – Ntayphay Luangrian (RNCM-NTL) and Lamadong Apuna Nupi Loop at Chuangphun village in Kangpokpi district on Monday.
Leaders of RNCM-NTL subordinate units and youth citizens of Bishnupur were also present in the meeting. The victims of the December 8 incident, identified as Jangaina and Ritalu Dangmei who identified themselves as Rongmei Nagas, were harassed and beaten up.
In front of the members present in the joint meeting, the criminals confessed their crime and asked for forgiveness. The apology was accepted and the matter settled as per Naga customary law.
According to the collective agreement, the main culprit, Lourembam Kennedy, will traditionally span a pig’s five hands to avoid further quarrels.
The accused, identified as Kennedy, and his friends involved in the assault case had agreed to pay Rs 20 lakh as fine for assault and physical harassment of the victims on or before December 16.
The joint agreement said, “Valley-based civil organizations must prevent and avoid the Rongmei Naga people of Bishnupur district for communal harmony and peaceful coexistence.”
It also said that in case of further harassment of the victims, organizations and individuals of Bishnupur district will be held responsible.
