Out of the 24 initiatives under the Smart City Mission, Imphal has finished 17 of them; the other seven are expected to be finished by August 2025. The city received 550cr in funding after being chosen in 2016 during the national urban development initiative’s Fast Track Round. Enhancing urban infrastructure while honoring local heritage and public needs is the aim, according to Th. Harikumar Singh, CEO of Imphal Smart City Ltd. One of the finished projects is Kangla Nongpok Torban, a revitalized riverbank area with bike and walking routes, green areas, and outdoor fitness centers. The Eastern Gate of Kangla Fort, also known as the Nongpok Thong, is nearby and has been restored to its original layout. Riverside development, according to Singh, is a green area intended to enhance public access and revitalize underutilized metropolitan regions.
Enhancements to public infrastructure also include benches around business districts like Thangal Bazar. The modifications have been well received by the locals, who have noted how helpful they are for those who need to rest while traveling through the city. A cultural plaza on Thangal Road that will be used as a pedestrian area, smart parking systems, and the Rs 187 crore Integrated Command and Control Centre for urban administration are examples of ongoing developments. Despite delays brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and recent violence in the area, work on the Smart City initiatives went on. There are still completion dates set, and according to city officials, the project is being carried out according to plan.
