The recent death of Vungzagin Valte, a sitting MLA for the Thanlon Assembly Constituency, has sparked renewed calls for justice from Kuki-Zo civil society organizations. Valte passed away at Medanta Medicity in Gurugram after enduring serious injuries from a mob assault that occurred on May 4, 2023, during the onset of ethnic violence in Manipur. His death has prompted the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) and other Kuki-Zo organizations in Sadar Hills and Kangpokpi to call for intervention from the Supreme Court and to declare a complete shutdown in Sadar Hills on the day of his final rites.

Described as a steadfast advocate for his people, Valte was noted for his vocal support of minority tribal rights and criticism of the state administration led by former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The CoTU expressed their deep sorrow over his death and highlighted serious security lapses, arguing that Valte, as a protected public figure, should have had adequate safety measures in place. They characterized his death as stemming from “ethnic and religious persecution,” urging the Supreme Court and investigative agencies to ensure justice is served.

Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) also voiced their condolences, highlighting Valte’s passing as reflective of the ongoing suffering faced by the Kuki-Zo community since the violence escalated in May 2023. They emphasized that his demise represents an irreparable loss to both his family and broader community, advocating for a fair political resolution to the persistent crisis affecting the region.

Moreover, the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) articulated the view that the attack on Valte was an affront to democracy itself, reiterating that his assailants, described as armed miscreants, must be held accountable. They have called for the establishment of a Separate Administration, proposing that this should take the form of a Union Territory with its own legislative body to serve the interests of the Kuki-Zo population.

This tragic event has once again spotlighted the unresolved issues regarding the violence in Manipur, while tribal organizations are urging the public to maintain calm and unity as they seek justice through lawful avenues.
