Pranab Jyoti Chetia, the General Secretary of Jatiya Dal Assam and a well-known human rights activist, has been detained by Hatigaon Police in connection with a controversial social media post allegedly linked to the banned militant group ULFA (I).
According to official sources, he was taken into custody late last night from his rented residence in Basisthapur Bylane 1 by the Officer-in-Charge of Hatigaon Police Station. The arrest has been recorded under Crime Branch Police Case No. 02/2025.
Chetia has been placed in police custody for further questioning and is scheduled to be produced in court later today. Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific legal provisions or charges filed against him.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Mrinal Deka confirmed the arrest and said that the investigation is ongoing. Further interrogation will follow court proceedings.
As of now, officials have not issued any detailed statement regarding the nature of the post or its direct connection to the proscribed outfit.
