Arambai Tenggol chief Korou Nganba Khuman emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence with the Kuki community while addressing the ongoing conflict in Manipur. He clarified that not all Kukis are seen as adversaries and underscored the need for a lasting resolution that tackles concerns of demographic imbalance stemming from illegal immigration. During a press interaction in Imphal, Khuman urged the identification of illegal immigrants through systems like the National Register of Citizens (NRC), emphasizing that Kukis who have resided in Manipur ought to remain in the state.
Khuman articulated that his group does not regard every Kuki as an enemy and aims for harmony, but he raised significant issues relating to demographic shifts, drug trafficking, and the impacts of illegal immigration, stating these challenges must be confronted to achieve stability. He affirmed the reality of illegal immigration and the necessity of implementing clear measures to address it. Furthermore, he called upon elected officials to prioritize state interests above all other considerations.
Regarding the Arambai Tenggol group, Khuman mentioned that while it intends to maintain a peaceful presence, it will mobilize as necessary. The ongoing ethnic strife between the Meitei and Kuki communities has resulted in over 260 fatalities and has displaced thousands since May 2023, prompting the implementation of President’s Rule in the region.
