Ajit Lal, a retired IPS officer from the 1974 Himachal Pradesh cadre, is set to succeed A.K. Mishra as the North East adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs following the conclusion of Mishra’s tenure. Mishra, a 1987 Rajasthan cadre officer, has been actively involved in negotiations with Kuki-Zo insurgent groups under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement and in the ongoing Naga peace talks. This appointment is significant as the central government is engaged in political discussions with SoO groups advocating for a Union Territory with its own legislature, with the SoO pact recently extended for an additional five years. Although an official announcement is pending, Mishra has informed attendees at a recent meeting in New Delhi that Lal would take over his duties. Lal has prior experience with the Northeast, having participated in Naga talks in 2014, and retired as the chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee in July 2014 after serving as special director in the Intelligence Bureau, particularly focusing on insurgency-affected areas.
