The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) has declared the 46th Realisation Month from March 17 to April 17, centered on the theme “Realise to Save the Indigenous Peoples of Manipur.” This observance commemorates the growing concerns among the indigenous population since Manipur’s merger with India in 1949, particularly regarding the influx of outsiders, which began following the opening of entry into the state in 1950 under Chief Commissioner Himat Singh. Census data from the years 1951, 1961, and 1971 highlighted demographic changes that alarmed indigenous communities, prompting AMSU to initiate the “Go Back Foreigners” movement in 1980 aimed at protecting the rights and identity of native people. This movement not only led to the loss of lives, specifically of student activists Potsangbam Lukhoi and Huidrom Loken, but also resulted in injuries to numerous others.

To honor these sacrifices and enhance public awareness, April 17 is observed annually as Realisation Day, serving as a reminder for vigilance regarding indigenous issues. The AMSU has planned various awareness initiatives during the 46th Realisation Month, including seminars, discussions, poster campaigns, academic engagements, and competitions such as debates and painting contests to foster student involvement. Further events include mass rallies, blood donation camps, publicity drives, and leaflet distributions throughout the state.

The inaugural ceremony is scheduled for March 17 at Manipur University, starting at 11:00 am. The closing program on April 17 will commence with Yaikairol at 2:00 am, followed by a floral tribute at Pishum Chinga Macha at 9:00 am, culminating in a mass rally and public meeting at Imphal College. AMSU’s focus during this month is to highlight the difficulties faced by indigenous communities due to illegal immigration and advocate for measures to protect their rights and identity. Additionally, the union emphasizes that the upcoming national census (2026–2027) should only take place after the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is updated to ensure accurate identification of citizens.
